Atlético Madrid Agree Fee With Spurs For Cristian Romero

Atlético Madrid have agreed a £34.1 million deal, including add-ons, to seal the signing of Tottenham captain Cristian Romero. The deal will include a 15% sell-on clause.
Inter Milan had previously been the most interested party in the Argentine, but a deal was deemed financially out of reach by the Italian club.
Atlético have acted decisively following the collapse of a move to Serie A, having pursued Romero intensely in the prior summer and January transfer windows.
Tottenham signed the 2022 World Cup winner in a deal worth £42.5 million in the summer of 2021.
Romero featured 156 times for Tottenham since then, gaining the captaincy last season after being instrumental in Tottenham’s historic Europa League win the season before.
What Spurs fans won’t want to remember the Argentine for is his disciplinary record. The centre-back accumulated 38 yellow and 6 red cards across 5 seasons.
The former Atalanta and Juventus defender signed a new contract with the Lilywhites last summer, becoming Tottenham’s highest-paid player, yet reportedly informed the club of his desire for a new challenge early into this calendar year.
With the signings of Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke alongside existing members of the squad, Micky Van de Ven and Kevin Danso, Spurs can consider themselves covered in the centre-half department after Romero’s departure.
